All across the United States, public schools are failing our students.

Less than half of our students across all grade levels reach appropriate levels of proficiency in math and reading. The statistic becomes even worse for students of color, as there is a 30% achievement gap between black and white students. Many public schools lack basic school supplies and infrastructure - including textbooks, desks, and even properly operating restrooms. Many teachers are forced to provide necessary supplies for their classrooms, despite the fact that many of them are on low salaries that are sometimes not enough to provide for their families. Did I mention that the U.S. spends more per pupil than any other country?

All of this describes the real state of today's public education system in the U.S., both in traditional and charter schools.

However, instead of focusing on these real problems and passing laws to help our students, politicians choose to focus on blaming all of this on charter schools. The fact is, both traditional and charter schools have the potential to be good schools that serve our students well, and charter school policies should reflect the different situations that exist in different communities. Instead of placing the blame solely on charter schools, politicians should focus on bringing real solutions that can empower our teachers and students. There are thousands of dedicated teachers in both traditional and charter schools all across the country that have done great service to our students.

It is time for lawmakers to understand this and support presidential candidate Andrew Yang's stance, which promotes good public schools - both traditional and charter.

In his own words:

"There are very good public schools and very bad public schools. There are very good charter schools and very bad charter schools. The goal should be to make more schools high-quality and effective - not denounce an entire category.

I have friends who have put their heart and soul into charter schools for underprivileged kids who were being failed by our public school system. Many changed thousands of lives for the better. I admire their work a great deal. They were there for the kids. No other reason.

Of course there are thousands of dedicated teachers in public schools who are doing incredible work each day. They deserve higher pay more respect and more support. They also deserve more flexibility in how they do their jobs.

Castigating all public schools or all charter schools does educators a massive disservice by calling into question the work they do with our kids every day. We should be looking to make all of their jobs easier by putting resources into both schools and households."

Supporting effective and efficient public schools should be common sense, yet so many politicians fall into the trap of pitting traditional schools and charter schools against each other. Sign and share this petition to call on presidential candidates and politicians at all levels - federal, state, city, schools board, etc. - to follow Yang's footsteps and support all good public schools that benefit our students.
