A dark day for Hong Kong
Jun 30, 2020 —
Today is a dark day for Hong Kong.
The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) illiberal and anti-democratic so-called National Security Law has been promulgated.
This development makes it clear that the CCP has now firmly extended its rule by fear to Hong Kong.
It means that from now on the CCP will play the role of the judge, jury and executioner.
From now on not only "One Country, Two Systems" is firmly history, but Hongkongers will also no longer enjoy their cherished rule of law.
In light of this dramatic crackdown on civil and political liberties of Hongkongers it is of paramount importance that the German government and European Union not only condemn the violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, but also take decisive counter-measures.
You may wonder what can realistically be done by the Europeans to constrain the authoritarian excesses of the CCP.
My friend and human rights advocate Benedict Rogers, "a co-founder of Hong Kong Watch, called for the appointment of a UN special envoy/rapporteur on Hong Kong, the passing of targeted sanctions against the perpetrators of human rights abuses, the formation of an international contact group to monitor the situation on the ground, and the coordination of an international life-boat policy 'to help Hongkongers in need of a lifeline'".
I agree with Ben.
Now is the time for the German government and European Union to act.
In the meantime please closely follow the breaking news about Hong Kong.
Please also inform your family members, friends and colleagues about this unacceptable power grab of the Chinese Communist Party.
Until soon, hopefully with better news.
