Currently, the maximum a widow can earn before social security will pay any of the deceased spouses benefits to her is just over $17,000!  This is poverty level.  In addition, when a spouse passes away the current wait time for social security to speak to the surviving spouse is two months!  If someone is earning less than $17,000 they can hardly wait two months to get the benefits their spouse paid into for their entire working life.

Added to the ridiculously low amount given for burial benefits which is less than $200,  the social security system is making it much harder at a time when the surviving spouse can least understand let alone navigate the mess.

These limits must be raised,  and there needs to be an acceleration process for widows/widowers instead of waiting over 60 days to understand their financial condition moving forward.
