Michael is a transman living in Belfast. He had to contact the police repeatedly about transphobic incidents and abuse in 2010. He also contacted the police in April 2012, to report assault. Unfortunately, nearly every time he called the police service of Northern Ireland, he was hung up on when he told them his name or he was asked to repeat and spell his name repeatedly. In the incident in April, the police told him they would come out to his flat immediately, but they did not contact him until 3 days later, after he had filed a hate crime report online. Transgender people should not have to need to repeat their name several times to police officers, or be ignored if the police officer does not think the person's voice, matches theIr gender. This shows a serious lack of transgender awareness training, carried out by the PSNI. I urge all trans people to sign this petition.
