Westboro Baptist Church has been infamously known for their picketing of military funerals around the country and their protests in the midwest. I think that the fact that they would even consider doing such a thing is a treacherous act in itself, and reading the things that they posted on their website made my stomach turn. It reads:
“The blood of the Newtown dead is on the hands of every preacher, teacher, parent and leader of Connecticut. The dead children of Sandy Hook Elementary are better off dead than to continue being raised for such great wrath and destruction as you have brought to this land. There is no hope for any child of this nation outside of Westboro Baptist Church. You have a duty to teach your children to fear God or else leave them to desolation, darkness and destruction. GOD WILL NOT HAVE FAG MARRIAGE!! YOUR CHILDREN'S BLOOD IS ON YOUR HANDS!!”
Picketing a funeral just because a state legalizes same-sex marriage is not only immoral and disgusting, but it is bordering on harassment. These people use their children and their religious beliefs to justify the act of harassing grieving families and friends of soldiers, blaming the deaths of children on their parents and educators. If “God hates Fags” isn’t hate speech, and the above text is not hate speech, I really don’t know what is. The first lady, who I admire and respect very much, is against bullying in schools, and has worked to make it a federal crime. But this is bigger than bullying. These people are adults, who use their children to do their dirty work and spread their hatred and bigotry. It needs to stop, now.
A fellow classmate of mine lost her brother in the Newtown shooting. His name was Noah Pozner. She was lucky enough to be able to go home during finals and be with her family, and also lucky enough to meet you, despite the circumstances. She got to attend her brother’s burial in peace, with her loved ones. The family and friends of Dawn Hochsprung will not get to say the same. WBC are going to ruin the grieving process and the privacy of all those suffering in Newtown, and this is not fair. These people must be stopped.
