Better facilities for KUL architecture students in Ghent
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
We as students in the faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven would like to make a formal request for some improvements in our facilities as we feel that we’re not sufficiently equipped to deal with what is required of us in an effective way. We will be presenting this petition to the programmes committee in 2 weeks so it would be great to have as many signatures as possible before then.
We feel that with some minor improvements we will be able to work better, significantly reduce our stress and improve the studio atmosphere on campus. Therefore we would like to suggest some changes:
• Longer opening times for the Sint Niklaasstraat studio
• Access to the studios on one day of the weekend
• Permanent desk spaces for master students in the studio
• A plotter in the Sint Niklaasstraat studio
• Improved storage
Currently there is a tangible divide between students in different years and between the national and international students. Part of the reason for this is that we don’t share studio space but only use it on allocated days. This not only reduces collaboration and communication but diminishes the studio atmosphere.
As most of us are in rental accommodation with limited space it’s difficult and often claustrophobic to work from home as well as to transport large models back and forth. With the amount of work that is expected of us, all of the students are forced to work at home during weekends due to the unavailability of workspace. With the addition of group work which makes up a significant part of the programme this becomes especially difficult.
With regards to the plotter, the opening times for the print lab are very limited and constrained to weekdays (10:00-12:30, 13:00-1700) which forces students to use expensive private printing companies to meet deadlines. The location is also very inconvenient as we have to travel back and forth to collect prints and share the two plotters with the rest of the LUCA students.
We’re confident that these changes would significantly improve the atmosphere in the studio and students’ experiences as well as make the faculty a more attractive place to study.
