Recently, Minister for Law, Justice, & Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang was quoted as saying that female students who go to Bangladesh "sell themselves" in exchange for their MBBS degree. The statement was made during a school function in Kathmandu.

His statement not only degrades the character of thousands of female Nepali students studying in Bangladesh, but also lays serious accusation upon the various medical institutions across Bangladesh that have agreed to enroll students from Nepal. His speech not only demoralises the women but also their parents who agree to send their daughters to Bangladesh for education. His speech has deeply hurt the sentiments of majority of the Nepali population both living within the country and abroad.

Mr. Sher Bahadur Tamang seems to be unaware of the weight of his words and actions. The people of Nepal need someone who has control over his speech. We want someone who can walk the talk. His statement cannot be justified under any circumstance. His apology doesn't not cover up for the fact that instead of opening up investigation against the rumored perpetrators, he has chosen to blame the victim ( if any). This shows that even if such incidents did occur, he would label the victims as prostitutes instead. His myopic view regarding women has deeply disheartened the Nepalese people.

Therefore, as the people of a democratic country, we urge the Government of Nepal to relieve him of his duties as the Minister for Law, Justice, & Parliamentary Affairs.

Doing so will ensure that other men in power never repeat the mistake he has made. The people of Nepal need to be assured that they are infact living under Democracy and not under some Panchayati rule where men in power get away with their ill presentation regarding pressing matters.

We want our leaders to show respect for the mass that can either make or break them. We want our leaders to see us and feel our emotions. A leadership where leaders can't empathize with the public is a failed leadership. The people of Nepal deserve better.
