Floods in Kashmir - 2014
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi on his visit to Kashmir said that Floods in Kashmir is a national level disaster, he said this while adding that the state is witnessing the worst flood in the last 50 years. He appealed he will extend help to Pakistan and said that India is ready to provide assistance to Pakistan to deal with the flood-ravaged areas of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Supreme Court of India on the other hand has asked the Jammu and Kashmir Government to take steps for the rehabilitation of flood victims by making more food, water, medicines and fuel available to them. They have also asked the state government to consider the grant to be of ex-gratia to those affected by the floods and till date no such help has been provided to victim families and as the winter is approaching the victim families are the worst sufferers.
Center for youth development have started its work during floods from 8 Sep. 2014 and have done relief work in flood hit areas of Kashmir. Our team has managed to get a sample data of 500 flood hit victims’ families whose properties were uninsured. Center for youth development deployed teams to provide assistance to the communities in need. The most affected during these floods were students. 750 students among these 500 families may not continue with their education. 235 lost their jobs to floods. 78 females were sole earners for their families and some of them worked on daily wages to earn bread for their living.
The situation in Kashmir in today’s time is that Government of India and different companies can create substantial impact by supporting rehabilitation efforts and can play a vital role in long-term rehabilitating Kashmiri victim families. The most urgent needs are basic material for reconstruction of houses and many social organizations require financial assistance to support the effected families.
Center for youth development till date managed to work and assist the victims on our cost and now we request Indian organizations to support the families who have lost everything to floods.
We are worried if the rights steps are not taken at this juncture, the society may face problems like drug addiction, protection, immoral and unlawful activities and slavery.
