Let's avoid a fuel spill in Panama Bay! No to the oil pipeline!

The Ramsar Site known as the Bay of Panama is one of the most valuable wetlands in the Americas - a refuge for thousands of migratory birds flying from North America on their way south. The wetland also contains mangroves that provide refuge for local birds and marine species and protects Panama’s capital city from storms, hurricanes, and other effects of climate change. However, Panama's Supreme Court has now paved the way for a company to proceed and build an oil pipeline that would run through part of the Bay, threatening the wildlife and the mangroves that protect Panama City.

Despite a ban on developing projects within the Bay of Panama Wetland, Panama’s Supreme Court recently declared the Ministry of Environment’s 2014 decision to cancel the pipeline “illegal”. The Court’s ruling seriously threatens the Panama Bay, since the company will now be able to resume work to install the pipeline. If the pipeline is installed inside the protected area, there will be a serious risk of an oil spill in the Bay, irreversibly destroying mangroves, poisoning the waters, and polluting species that depend on this ecosystem.

Chagres River Waterkeeper (through its parent organization Centro de Incidencia Ambiental), along with other environmental non-governmental organizations in Panama, has challenged the oil pipeline in Panama’s Supreme Court. Please sign this petition in support of their lawsuit to protect the Bay of Panama Ramsar Site!
