Mr. Smith started this petition to Boris Johnson - British Prime Minister (UK Goverment)

The COVID-19 outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 by the World Health Organization.

With confirmed cases in the UK on the increase, we need the Government to take decisive action now and implement robust preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in order to protect the most vulnerable members of society; the elderly, pregnant women, the young and those with pre-existing conditions.

Let's show COVID-19 that the human spirit and resolve is more powerful by spreading this petition to all our family, friends and colleagues so that the issue can be debated in Parliament as soon as possible.

This is not about panic, this is about giving the public a voice and making our Government accountable for its lack of action to date.

And it's the Government's duty to put public health before economic health and to show the world that the United Kingdom puts its people before the pound.

Now is not the time for the public to be kept in the dark about COVID-19. Fear of the unknown is our worst enemy. The Government needs to set clear guidelines so that employers can keep their staff safe and informed.

Italy has shown that COVID-19 can spread rapidly with confirmed cases of infection reaching into the hundreds in a matter of days not weeks. Worldwide COVID-19 has caused 2,979 deaths this year (correct as of 01 March 2020).

Therefore prevention at a high economic cost is better than letting COVID-19 spread and dealing with the aftermath of significant economic cost and loss of life.

COVID-19 does not have a vaccine, the "flu" does. This virus is highly contagious, the SARS virus took 8 months to get to 8,000 cases. COVID-19 is in excess of 80,000 cases in 2 months.

The specific points which are to be debated by Parliament are shown below along with suggested response actions for consideration as to their feasibility.

1. KEEP OUR PEOPLE BETTER INFORMED

Provide an online heat map of specific areas exposed to COVID-19 so that people can take appropriate measures to reduce the risk of infection.

2. IMPROVED GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR EMPLOYERS

If a place of work has potentially been exposed to the virus, employers are to provide daily updates to its staff and confirm test results of suspected cases as and when they become available.

3. CLOSE PLACES OF WORK POTENTIALLY EXPOSED TO THE VIRUS PENDING TEST RESULTS

Where a place of work (excluding hospitals and the like) has possibly been exposed to the virus, keep the work place closed until the result of the test for suspected cases are known.

 - The commercial impact can be mitigated by allowing staff to work from home.

- Government funds to be set aside to compensate people for loss of earnings.

- Public Health England testing facilities improved so that samples received by noon can have same day results communicated.

4. RAPID GOVERNMENT FUNDED DECONTAMINATION

If work places are closed due to being exposed to the virus, use Government investment for rapid response deep cleaning to enable decontamination and places of work to be safely reopened.
