If you want to avoid the long, winding drive to Skyline Boulevard, the trail section of Alpine Road offers the best access to the greatest hiking and riding on the Peninsula. It did until late in January 2013 that is. It’s closed now because of a minor slide.

- San Mateo County and the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District
The trail section of Alpine Road connects San Francisco Peninsula and South Bay trail users with the best, lowest impact access to the 25,000 acres of land managed by Midpeninsula and other open space districts.
A slide damaged the old roadbed last winter. In late January, the County abruptly closed the route though it is still quite serviceable for trail users. (The route has been closed to public vehicles for 20 + years)
Please address the minor safety improvements you deem necessary and reopen Alpine for trail users. In the long term: please work together, and with surrounding, towns, and volunteer organizations to maintain and improve this important trail link.
