Financialaid Sweden started this petition to KTH Royal Institute of Technology and

Dear university, dear principals and authorities,

We are a group of KTH students from different countries and different programmes. We want to firstly thank KTH for the effort you have made together with Swedish
authorities, you made the study in Sweden possible for all of us in such a hard time in the pandemic.

However, many of us are facing the reality that what we have now is too different from what we have expected.

What is the difference between reality and the promises of KTH?

At the beginning KTH announced that at least 50 % of the education is performed on campus per year so that we have to physically arrive at KTH campus to register and attend all the classes or we will lose the opportunity to study. But it turned out to be that most or almost all the courses are digital.

Giving one concrete example from one EECS programme, in period 1, there were only two classes that gave the possibility to attend on campus. In period 2, all the courses are only in digital format! Some professors are not used to this new way of teaching yet, resulting in bad interaction and poor quality in the digital classes, and making it hard for students to follow. Some were without any live stream or timely feedback, and one course is even using pre-recorded videos from two years ago that were available on edX for free. Besides, an engineering programme requires a lot of hands-on experiments in the lab, but the labs are not an option due to covid-19. The fully digital courses give us no opportunities to experience the campus life and facility in real life.

We fought all the difficulties, took all the risks in this pandemic, holding the belief that it would be worth it, and flew all the way to Sweden to study, and we are extremely disappointed about the differences between our expectations and the reality of the education provided by KTH .

What problems are students facing?

Many students are facing urgent financial difficulties due to covid-19. The fee-paying students rely financially on their family, their limited savings, or loans to study at KTH. The pandemic hit them financially and some students have to resort to usury to study at KTH.

Apart from less on-campus experience, staying at home recommendation and the pandemic
impact on the economy also makes it much harder to find a job. Staying abroad costs us a huge amount of money on rent and living expenses, yet we are having online classes only, even career fair is online, for students who are seeking a job alongside study to ease their financial burden, finding a job has never been this hard. Studying in Sweden for many students has been more unaffordable than most of us estimated it to be.

What are we students appealing for?

We are here for the quality education and facilities promised by KTH, yet we are unfairly asked to pay the expensive full tuition fee even when we don’t have the access to fully utilise them, and when we are most financially vulnerable. Uppsala and Lund Universities provided their solutions to this issue, and unfortunately, we haven’t seen any actions from KTH(You can see the other universities' solutions in the following links).

Uppsala University:

Lund University:
https://www.keg.lu.se/en/article/lund-university-covid-19-hardship-scholarship

The education we had, despite KTH’s effort in maintaining teaching quality for remote study, does not match the promised one, given that all the classes are digital, pre-recorded, labs, projects and assignments which in normal days should be given lively on campus do not exist anymore. We face more difficulties than students in previous years, paying the same amount of tuition fee, yet a large part of the education is not available to us as promised.

We understand that the needs for financial aid vary among students, therefore we propose KTH to give an up-to-100% financial aid scholarship depending on students' needs. This should be applicable for both international students and EU students giving that we are all facing difficulties during the pandemic. This scholarship should be available for each semester as long as the pandemic situation is not eased.

At the end, to all the students, fellows
