The Students At Mac started this petition to MSU President (McMaster Student Union) and

Under COVID-19 guidelines, the McMaster Pulse closed in mid-March when McMaster University closed all of its facilities. Despite COVID restrictions having to begun to loosen up and with many students coming back to the McMaster area, the Pulse has remained closed. With public health guidelines allowing for the reopening of gyms, athletic facilities, and parks, there exist questions regarding when the Pulse will reopen.

Hundreds of students within the McMaster population rely on the David Braley Athletic Center, including the Pulse on a day to day basis. The McMaster Athletic Center provides students with a safe space that offers programs, services, and facilities that support the cultivation of human potential and well-being. DBAC's positive space provides students with an environment to help students relieve stress, increase sleep and energy levels, lower risk of heart disease, and increase general well-being. The David Braley Athletic Center is an important place for a large portion of the McMaster population, and it would be unfair to take that away from them. Ultimately, the physical and psychological well-being of the McMaster Student Population relies on having facilities such as DBAC to foster a community that encourages such success.

With winter quickly approaching there is beginning to be fewer opportunities to be active outside and to engage in physical activity.  With the inability to engage in outdoor physical activity, many students fall into a position where they do not have room to engage in physical activity. Reopening DBAC would allow students to remain active throughout the winter months.

It is important to maintain within the COVID-19 restrictions and ensuring that the McMaster Community feel safe within their attempts to increase their health and well-being. This feeling of safety has not been felt for many students as they attempt to work out at places such as Crunch West Hamilton, where restrictions are loose and over-crowding is an issue. Reopening DBAC would entail numerous safety protocols and changes to facility function but, that is something students are willing to endure.

Additionally, students understand that 75% of the fall term fee was refunded but, there exists students that are willing to pay a small fee that would benefit many. With only fall semester fees refunded there exists uncertainty with respect to the winter semester fees. Will students have access to the David Bradley Athletic Facility or will they be receiving additional money back?

Ultimately, with students willing to pay additional student fees, fees within a reasonable and fair amount, it is essential for the well-being of the student population to reopen McMaster Athletic Facilities.
