While it is currently illegal in Kentucky to fight dogs, it is not illegal to own, breed, or train dogs for the purpose of dog fighting. As a Kentuckian, and a person who believes that all sentient beings should be protected from cruel treatment and abuse, I am ashamed and appalled to learn that Kentucky is the only state in our nation that has not passed the amendment regarding the owning, possessing, keeping, breeding, training, selling, or transferring of canines for fighting purposes within the offense of cruelty to animals in the first degree.
As a result, our state has become a haven for people who own, breed, sell, and train dogs for the purpose of dog fighting. These atrocious people flock to Kentucky from far and wide because they know as long as they are not caught in the act of actually fighting the dogs, they will never be charged with a crime of any kind. Dog fighting rings are notoriously hard to locate and I have yet to hear of any such operation being shut down in our state. I have not seen or heard any news reports of anyone being prosecuted for these crimes anywhere in Kentucky. Are these the kinds of people we want living in our state? Is this something that we can be proud of?
Not only is dog fighting cruel and inhumane to the dogs that are doing the actual fighting, but also for the poor defenseless animals that these insidious people procure from shelters, pick up as strays from the street, breed just for the purpose, acquire via classified ads for dogs “free to a good home”, and even steal from unsuspecting owners, only to be used as bait dogs for training purposes.
I am asking you to please pass the amendment so that the people of our state, as well as our entire nation, can be proud of Kentucky rather than ashamed. Please take action now and make these cruel and inhumane practices disappear from the face of the earth!
