Please Adopt Fair Regulation of Short Term Rentals in Santa Barbara County!

In Santa Barbara County, significant economic, environmental, and social benefits are provided by Short Term Rentals, and prohibition of STRs is an over-reaching solution that devastates this important part of our local community. There are much better alternatives available for the management of STRs.

The housing and neighborhood compatibility problems associated with STRs are vastly overstated.  In contrast, data-supported reports (and other analyses) show that STR's affect an insignificant percentage of the long-term housing supply, and nuisance reporting rates for STR's are slightly less (to substantially less) than the nuisance reporting rates for all residential properties.

Please do not take a "sledgehammer" approach to address issues that can be easily managed through Fair Regulation.  An Ordinance that properly manages STRs has already been drafted. This is an option that the Board of Supervisors could be voting on now, or at a hearing in the near future.

Furthermore, there are already successful ordinances on the books in neighboring communities such as Goleta and Ventura, from which proven and successful regulations can be easily copied and adopted.

Please vote to develop and adopt an Ordinance that preserves all the benefits of STR’s, while minimizing (or eliminating) any negative effects, and please do not ever consider Prohibition as the best way to manage this modern issue.
