Why this petition matters

Plastic is the major source of pollution. Animals get threatened with their lives, because of plastic. Hundreds, thousands, and millions of animals are killed by plastic. Some people might not care about animals, but it doesn't only impact the animals but our lives. It is also a cause of pollution. I strongly believe that plastics should be banned because it impacts our lives, threatens the animals, and causes pollution.

People need food and we have to eat food daily. Food is an important resource where we get energy from. Now try to imagine that we are having plastics as our daily food. Yuck! However, here is a shocking fact. According to one video that explains about plastics' hardness, Dr. Binocs from Peekaboo Kidz, scientists have found micro plastics in 114 marine species, and almost ⅓ of these end up on our plates, also they've been found in the majority of world's tap water. Micro plastics are also consumed by people through food and air. It also affects our health. The plastic typically used in bottles, bags and food containers contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors, which are associated with negative health effects including cancers, birth defects and immune system. Isn't this like a cycle that would never end?

The second reason is that plastic causes animals to die. Animals are very important. Some people may think animals aren't important, but no! If the balance gets destroyed, it would have a huge impact on the food chain. However, plastics are killing millions of animals. Ingested plastic pieces can kill the animals by puncturing their digestive systems. For example, the sea turtles eat the plastic bags because they can't identify the jellyfishes with plastics. Scientists found out that sea birds such as albatrosses ingest the debris. Scientists estimated that plastic debris kills roughly 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals. For example, sea turtles and dolphins each year. One fact is that 34% of dead leatherback sea turtles have ingested plastic. This is a very serious problem; we should try to solve it!

Another huge problem that plastic causes is pollution. Did you know that it takes hundreds years for a plastic to degrade in a landfill? However, plastic bags don't break down completely. According to beat-plastic-pollution, the bag becomes micro plastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment. However in 2015, about 730,000 tons of plastic bags were generated in the United States but more than 87% are never recycled winding up in landfills and oceans. It also harms the ocean! Plastic makes up roughly 80 percent of ocean waste.

Plastics are the most harmful material for the environment and animals today. Just because plastics are easy to handle and convenient, we can't continue to use plastic, because many huge and serious problems are led by plastics. Plastic impacts humans, ourselves, it threatens animals, and it also causes the most huge problem pollution, which affects the environment. If we don't ban plastic, the environment problems and the animals would get horribly damaged. I strongly believe we should ban plastic. Act now! Stop using plastic; start using environmental friendly materials.
