I am Kavana Anklekar, studying in The Orbis school, Pune.
Lessons taught in school kindled my mind to do more research to understand the harmful effects of plastic waste. The answers set me thinking to take action rather than be a passive witness.
It is rightly said that this plastic waste could turn out to be a bigger threat than nuclear weapons. Not only does this waste prove to be a great hindrance towards creating a cleaner world but is also a huge threat to the lives of living beings.
Action needs to be taken, each ward needs to be made responsible and answerable on steps to be taken to solve this problem, citizens need to be made aware that the power to change lies in their hands.
My main aim of this petition is to request a complete ban on plastic bags. Though there is a ban on plastic bags less than 50 microns and shopping complexes charge a penny for the plastic bags, the situation doesn't seem to improve.
If plastic bags are banned in India, then people will be forced to carry jute bags as an alternative. Khadi bags can also be used, which shall give a boost to the Khadi industry.
It is true that a lot of plastic waste is generated from the packaging, plastic bottles and many such unavoidable things, but for sure plastic bags are not unavoidable.
As a citizen of a country which has always held Mother Nature with the utmost respect, I believe that we as a nation can take this small step.
If we can cope up with demonetisation, a ban on plastic bags won't cause us much trouble.
I urge my dear friends to sign this petition and take a small step towards protecting this beautiful planet that we live in.
