Why this petition matters

Started by Sophie Gladysz

Petition to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, to plant 2 billion trees as promised in the 2019 election. The climate crisis is already affecting the world, and if nothing is done about it, it will only get worst. The average global temperature is about 1.5 degree warmer than pre-industrial times, and the consequences are evident. If the global average temperature were to go up by 2 degree, it would lead to more frequent extreme heatwaves, rising sea levels, a loss in biodiversity, and much more. We need collective and individual action to fix the issue. We, the undersigned residents of Canada, call upon Justin Trudeau and the Government of Canada to follow through with their promise to plant two billion trees. During the 2019 election, Trudeau promised to plant 2 billion trees in the next decade. To reach the target number, Canada would need to have 200 million trees planted yearly. However, in 2021, only 8.5 million trees had been planted. Trees are essential as they provide shelter for certain animals and play a significant role in climate change. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide in the air through photosynthesis and, with the use of water and the sun, transform that carbon into sugar, which they use to grow. What is left gets put back into the atmosphere as oxygen. Trees can play a significant role in the fight against climate change, and the current government should finish what it set out to do.
