American drivers burn over 420 million gallons of gas every single day. That emits over 8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. According to the National Resources Defense Council, over 64,000 people suffer premature deaths each year because of air pollution. Lawmakers and transportation officials must recognize the environmental, health and economic impact of vehicle exhaust pollution and create a nationwide program to plant trees along our highway system.
