John Smith started this petition to Plant City High School Faculty

The National Honors Society club at Plant City High School has a large group of student members. One of the club's requirements is to volunteer two times per semester. This seems easy enough to students applying to the club. However, because there are so many members, volunteer opportunities get filled fast. It does not help that members have been told that only community service provided by the NHS club count towards our requirement. For example, if a student were to volunteer for another club's community service project, that would not count as one of the two NHS projects.

The main problem with the club is that communication between members and the club sponsor is difficult to achieve. The sponsor sends out a mass text to all members, and whoever happens to respond first is chosen. Normally there are less than 10 slots available per project, making the process of signing up for opportunities very difficult. If a student is at work, doing chores, at HCC for a dual enrollment class, at a sports game, etc. they miss out on these chances. This ineffective relaying of information creates frustration among members that can only heighten as the semester nears to an end. A more productive approach would be to open project eligibility to those of any other community service project accepted by the school and to inform members of these opportunities via a sign-up sheet including many varying volunteering opportunities at the start of the semester. As more opportunities arise, the sponsor can post on the club's page and detail where and when students can sign up for the project while in school. When over 200 members are all fighting to be volunteers for the same limiting opportunities, the actual services provided to our community are restricted.

It should also be noted that a club sponsor should be well-rounded. This club sponsor has been known to play favorites and has a past of rude encounters with students who aren't within that small circle. The club sponsor should be someone who can easily interact with students of any background. There should not be a pattern of the club sponsor favoring students based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or economic status. They should have connections beyond the city limits that can help expand the amount of service projects available along with expanding the time range of these projects. They should be known for being an active volunteer for a range of causes. They should be charismatic and make members excited to better their community. The club sponsor should not spend time in club meetings having all members create posters for "Principal Appreciation Week" instead of using that rare time to have members brainstorm possible service opportunities.

During nearly every club meeting, the club sponsor has stated that NHS members are the "cream of the crop," which is why NHS should have a sponsor with a reputation to match.

The new sponsor should be elected by club members.
