Targeting a student is unacceptable, regardless of whatever sexual orientation they identify as. Three students of the Plano East Senior High School student body outwardly threatened to commit a hate crime, to quote, “...beat the gay” out of another fellow student.
In a document provided by the Texas Association of School Boards, it states, “Bullying of a student because of the student’s failure to conform to gender stereotypes could be considered harassment because of sex in violation of federal nondiscrimination law.”
The 2017-2018 Student/Parent Policy guide states, “The district prohibits discrimination, including harassment, against any student on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national identity, disability or on any other basis prohibited by law.”
This fails to acknowledge sexual orientation, and this harassment targeted at a student is an example of the larger issue of intolerance. Many of my friends, people I consider family, have expressed their concern for their safety after having seen what these men have had to say. They represent Plano East Senior High school, one of the most diverse and accepting schools in North Texas, and behavior such as this should not be tolerated. I urge the administration to expel the students to set an example that threats against one’s life will not be tolerated, no matter whether it was intended as a joke or not.
