DENY Central Hudson the
Special Permit for its Proposed Gas Substation
(An update to the petition of October 9, 2017)
Since the summer of 2017, City of Kingston citizens who would be directly impacted by the Central Hudson Gas Substation being proposed in a densely populated residential area at 245 Washington Avenue in uptown, have raised many questions and have requested more information regarding the health, safety, environmental, property value, and community character impacts of the project.
At a recent Kingston Planning board meeting on October 16th, additional testimony was provided by residents leading to a decision by the planning board to arrange a follow-up meeting that would bring together all of the stakeholders to find an amicable solution.
Residents submitted a letter to the Planning Board reiterating their concerns as well as their willingness to meet, yet over a month later have not received a response from Central Hudson nor has a meeting by the Kingston Planning Board been arranged.
We believe that Central Hudson is not responding as a good neighbor with a continuous lack of communication and unwillingness to engage in a stakeholder meeting.
The Kingston Planning Board is charged with protecting the health, safety, environmental well-being, and property values of Kingston residents, as well as the character of our residential neighborhood. In order to fulfill this mission, the board has a responsibility to facilitate a meeting that includes all stakeholders and to create a process that allows for the pursuit of reasonable alternatives to the Washington Avenue location. Although we support Central Hudson’s effort to improve its gas infrastructure by replacing or retrofitting the current gas regulator substation on Emerson Street, we respectfully urge the Planning Board to DENY the special permit.
