I recently wrote to the Ballycastle Branch of the Royal British Legion to raise concerns over the benches which were erected at the local war memorial in November of last year.

As a descendant of one of the individuals named on the memorial and a historian who has spent significant time researching Ballycastle and the First World war, I feel the symbolism used imposes one cultural narrative on all those named and ignores the reality of the range of identities which include both Irish and British. The inclusion of the current symbolism on a permanent basis makes a perviously neutral space exclusionary and divisive. The legacy Moyle Council had a no flag or emblems policy in order to foster and maintain positive cross-community relations. I feel this is a importance practice to uphold.

In my letter to the RBL, I had proposed that the benches in the current form be removed and replaced with ones that are inclusive of all and simply commemorate the local loss of life and that which connects us all, our local town. To date I have had no reply from the RBL, therefore I ask the planning department at Causeway Coast and Glens Council to consider my proposal to remove the benches in their current form and replace with one that are respectful to all individuals named and their families.
