James Peck started this petition to Plaistow Board of Selectmen

The town needs an official heritage commission under NH law that will oversee and safeguard our precious cultural and historic resources. This commission, comprised of up to 5 knowledgeable citizens will provide a resource for the town and property owners of houses and buildings built before 1900. The commission is advisory only and would not have regulatory powers.

Recently, a property owner decided to tear down the old North Parish Meetinghouse built in 1837. The town had no commission that the owner could consult with to seek grants or other support to save this iconic landmark. A heritage commission is designed to represent the town in a negotiation with the property owner which provides a way to potentially save those buildings.

The heritage commission would create an inventory of all properties built before 1900 and a property owner would have to discuss alternatives with the commission before acting. The owner has no obligation to follow the commission’s recommendations and will always have the right to tear down a building.

The heritage commission would be very similar to the town’s current Conservation Commission which is strictly advisory and protects the town’s natural resources.

We, the registered voters of Plaistow respectfully request that the warrant for a heritage commission be placed on the March 2021 ballot.
