At Plainfield schools, students are required to take gym class every year, taking out a period of the day. Many students would rather have that period to include another class they would like to take whether it’s for more credits or for a relaxing, enjoyable elective to focus on. However, students are forced to run around and sweat in a class they may or may not want to be in when they could be taking a class they do want to be in. Of course health and fitness is important, so a change in credit requirements is the way to go! Instead of making gym mandatory for all four years, make gym class based on credits that equal only two years—whether that be freshman and sophomore year or sophomore and senior year (it’s up to the students to decide during scheduling). This would ensure fitness in at least half of a students high school career while the other half can focus on other electives they might be missing out on due to four year gym classes.
