Why this petition matters

Rio-Bravo Rocklin is a biomass power plant located in Lincoln on the Rocklin border near Whitney Ranch community. Biomass power plants create energy by burning wood from forests and housing scraps. Studies have shown that biomass plants release multiple gases, VOC's, heavy metals, PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles as well as large amounts of CO2.

In recent years, biomass plants have been closing all over California and only a few still remain. There are more cost effective and less polluting solutions like gas, solar and wind that the state is transitioning to instead.

The American Lung Association has opposed granting renewable energy subsidies for biomass combustion because it is so polluting. The American Heart Association has called these plants a danger to public health, as the pollution produces respiratory illnesses, heart disease, cancer and development delays in children. Studies have shown that even modern biomass plants are so inefficient that they tend to produce more pollutants than their coal burning counterparts.

We want to close this plant as many residents live nearby already and additional residential construction is planned even closer to the site. The site is located within 1.5 miles radius from several schools like Whitney High and Sunset Ranch Elementary, which means children are being exposed to pollutants on a constant basis. Rio Bravo-Rocklin has been sued for violating the CA clean water act in the past and we should not let it operate in the future.

The plant was designed and built back in 1989 in a non populated area. However, since then the area experienced a population boom with new residents coming to Rocklin, Roseville and Lincoln to call that place their home.

We should not be ignorant.
