Sue Sheth started this petition to Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District

It's time PYLUSD provide more instructional minutes for our elementary school students, specifically 1st-6th graders.

Two to three hours of teacher instruction per day is not enough to provide our children with the proper education they need for the next grade level.

Our students deserve more online OR in-person learning with qualified and credentialed teachers. They shouldn’t be asked to teach themselves using Google Classroom at home.

1. There are other Orange County public school districts that currently provide double the instructional minutes as PYLUSD: Irvine Unified School District provides 4-6 hours of instructional minutes, in-person, 5 days per week. Fullerton School District provides 4-6 hours of instructional minutes, in-person, 5 days per week. Why are those students getting 4-6 hours of school per day, 5 days a week, when we are not?

2. PYLUSD was forced to make quick decisions during the onset of the pandemic that, while are understandable, have not been ideal for students and families-- especially for working parents. Far into the pandemic now, the district has a better understanding of how to safely operate schools with the students' best interest in mind. Our district needs to find a way to provide online or in-person instruction that is more than 2-3 hours -- as our neighboring districts have done.

3. When parents call the district to express their concerns, the district references "Senate Bill 98" -- an emergency bill signed in June 2020 which states that the minimum instructional minutes for grades 4-12 is 240 minutes.

Currently, our 4th graders are only receiving 120-150 minutes of instruction via a credentialed teacher. For the remaining 90 minutes, the children are asked to learn independently by using online resources such as "Mystery Doug." This cannot replace the education students receive from an actual teacher.

We believe the district should do everything in its power to give our children at least 4 hours or 240 minutes of instruction by a credentialed teacher.

The current global pandemic will not disappear anytime soon, and so we urge the district to find a way to provide the full 240 minutes of instruction elementary school students need and deserve.

We know that PYLUSD has the same end-goal: The best interest of all its students.
