Sister Rosetta Tharpe holds a unique place in music history. The late Ms. Tharpe’s vocals and electric guitar playing broke multiple barriers at a time when crossovers between spiritual and secular artists was almost unheard of. From north to south, at home and overseas, Sister Rosetta Tharpe created a legacy that influenced artists from Johnny Cash to Keith Richards. Gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz, and rock n roll (where she is considered by many as “the godmother” of the genre) all bare her touch. Now we call upon the Fort Smith City Hall to honor this Arkansas born musician by erecting a statue on your grounds in her honor.
