Obsolete workplace mannerisms such as ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’ represent the colonial mindset. Therefore, we must get rid of such idiosyncrasies without further ado, and focus on creating a healthier work environment based on mutual respect.

In the era of rapid globalization, work cultures of most countries have undergone a paradigm shift. Now, workplaces all over the world are evolving and thriving as team environments, especially in the Western World and the Americas where subordinates often address their bosses with names. Whereas in the Indian workplace, calling ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’ is a norm.

It might seem petty to many of us, but it is a big issue in India or the Indian subcontinent for those in ‘important positions’. They see it as a grave offense if someone addressed them as something other than the mentioned honorifics.

Some of them will not even answer and the polite among them will stare at you until you realise the error in your ways and correct yourself immediately.

What happened to our own honorifics in traditional Indian languages that we were using before Britishers entered India, such as Ji in Hindi, Rao in Marathi, babu in Bengali, guru in Telugu, sahab in Urdu, etc.

Let’s change!
