Keep Full Day Kindergarten in the PCSD Budget

Out of 719 districts in NYS, Pittsford Central School District is one of five that is still without a full-day Kindergarten program. Over the past three years, our administrators have been working with parents, teachers, and curriculum experts to research and develop a play-based program that will meet the standards of our highly ranked district.
Current research shows that over 32% of our half-day Kindergarteners take three years to catch up with their full-day peers in literacy. Falling behind can have drastic implications on students’ confidence, which impacts learning for years to come.
Full day Kindergarten will give our youngest learners the opportunity to have math and reading every day (instead of every other day), to have recess, to have access to art education, as well as more time for science, social studies, music, and physical education. With the current half-day program lasting 2.75 hours, it is impossible for the teachers to achieve NYS Kindergarten goals and to allow time for the children to socialize and play, which should be the most important aspects of a Kindergartener’s day.
The excellence of our schools attracts new families to buy homes in Pittsford and keeps our home values high in comparison to surrounding towns. It is critical that we continue to meet the needs of all of our learners, and keep education at the forefront of our community.
PCSD has provided extensive research on full day Kindergarten. Please visit pittsfordschools.org for more information.
Due to the difficulty in obtaining a super-majority on the school budget, we need you to make your voice heard.
Our goal with this petition is to demonstrate the community’s resolve to include Full-Day Kindergarten as part of our children’s educational experience. This petition will be delivered to the Board of Education on Friday, May 19, 2017 before any decisions are made on the new budget.
