Why this petition matters

The announcement was recently made that the Piscataway Board of Education voted to cancel "fall athletics, marching band, and all other in-person competitions" due to the ongoing pandemic in 2020. This decision was made prematurely without any notice to parents, students, or coaches. Piscataway has become one of the earliest schools in the area to cancel fall sports and activities. As a school that prides itself on the success of the many fall sports teams, Piscataway should not be one of the first schools to cancel. Students, faculty, and administrators were able to voice their concerns and have a say in the decision behind having remote learning, but when it came to the decision to cancel sports, no one was given a chance to speak their mind. With the prospect of fall seasons starting in October, this decision was made way too early as a lot can happen in a month and a half including a vaccine and drastic drops in cases. The NJSIAA has stated in their most recent COVID-19 update that high school sports may return to play even if learning is remote-only if many guidelines and precautions were followed. Many other schools in Middlesex County and the rest of New Jersey have been practicing with the appropriate safety precautions and have had great success. Sports and competitions play a large role in shaping these students' lives. Potential scholarships and opportunities will be missed out on because of the decision to cancel fall sports. To some students, sports and activities are what keep them going in life and to have it all taken away without any say so is unfair. Many students may leave Piscataway High School as a result. I know many students, parents, and coaches are disappointed in this decision and would rather wait for a collective decision made by the GMC conference or NJSIAA. It should be a parent and student's decision as to whether or not they want to put themselves in a position to participate in their sport or activity.
