Protect Property Owners from Pipelines

Currently, the PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) fails to include clear guidelines on where pipelines can be placed. According to the Citizen Action Monitor, the only mention of pipeline regulation pertaining to the protection of private property is that “pipeline right-of-way must be selected to avoid, as far as practicable, areas containing private dwellings, industrial buildings, and places of public assembly." This is far too vague to protect anyone, and for property owners around the country, this oversight has proved to be devastating. My grandmother, who is 87 and has lived in her current home on our family farm for the past 63 years, was told that a pipeline was to be installed mere feet from her water well. The attached picture is where they have dug through her fields to begin construction. Tragedies like this one can be found throughout the nation, the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines being two famous examples that have caused controversy due to environmental and ethical issues. We cannot allow such poor treatment of landowners to continue. Sign this petition to help implement regulations that protect private property.
