Dixon Beckstead started this petition to Pioneer Elementary Parents and Administration

The Pioneer Elementary School has gone through a bunch of changes this year. The two I am concerned with today are the new lunch schedules and the new Principal. Previous to this year the students from Pioneer and Oakwood Elementary Schools ate in the same cafeteria located in the Oakwood that means twice the children were fed and most never felt rushed, as of this year a new cafeteria was built for the Pioneer to feed the students in grades K-2. With the new cafeteria and Principal it was decided to feed the children after they play out at recess so that they aren't in to much of a hurry to get out side that they don't eat. The problem with this is it gives the children a hard stop to their lunch so they can make it to class. Where as previously they would just have a shorter recess. The lunch times overlap now and with the overlap this configuration shorts the children of some of their eating time.

On February fifth I attended lunch with two of my children one kindergartener and one second grade. As the children filed into the cafeteria for the second grade lunch they scanned to pay for lunch and made it through the line rather smoothly but the last student had approximately 7 minutes to get a milk and their fruit/condiments find a seat and eat some food, then dump their tray and get back to class, all while the next grade was rushing in. I witnessed a small girl take some chips from her tray and put them in her pocket to eat later due to the time constraints. Several children were still quite contently eating but were instructed to be finished and head to class. As the kindergarteners filled in there was not as tight of a time constraint but most children were not done eating when the five minute warning was called. That's when I saw the look of panic come in and these little children were worried that they would get in trouble if they finished their food and got quite nervous. One little girl said "O no here comes the other kids (the next grade) we have to go" the whole table scattered quick and here it all started again. I do believe we have a problem in this school and it is not with the teachers, aides or lunchroom staff they are GREAT!!!!!!! The schedule is a problem and needs addressed. I have brought these problems to the Principal Mr Scovill and have had a very cold reception to say the least.

We have tried this program for half of the school year and its still a problem. If the next grade was to come in ten minutes later I believe this format might work and if kids were still needing a minute more to eat they could. I do understand its more fun to play then it is to eat, but we shouldn't punish kids for being kids for a few extra minutes at lunch.

By signing this petition you are agreeing that you want a discussion to take place about the schedule and you are willing to talk to your children and form your own opinions and visit the school if needed to do so. You are also signing that you understand that Mr. Scovill does not deserve to be treated with any less respect than any of us, but that he needs to listen to parents concerns and address the problems at hand.

I am not saying I am right( I very well be wrong and accept that) but I feel that this needs looked at and I need some help to get the opportunity for all of our concerns to be heard.

There was another petition signed by a lot of people that I feel didn't fully express the situation and was more geared at dislike of Mr. Scovill.(I do not condemn that individual and share some of the same feelings) But that was not my intent, although Mr Scovill and I don't see eye to eye and he has refused meetings with me and other parents I feel he is in the position because he must have something to offer our children.

Thanks for reading this and please form your own opinion and sign if you feel inclined.

signed with our children in mind,

Dixon Beckstead
