A roundabout is proposed for the intersection of Highway 227 and Los Ranchos Road.  Congestion on Highway 227 between San Luis Obispo and South County has created frustrating delays and slowdowns for locals and commuters alike, especially during peak commute hours.

A professional traffic study completed in September 2021 identified improvements to this corridor as a top priority, and the roundabout as the best solution for easing traffic congestion and improving safety.

Roundabouts are a safer alternative to traffic signals and stop signs. The tight circle of a roundabout forces drivers to slow down, and the most severe types of intersection crashes — right-angle, left-turn and head-on collisions — are unlikely (source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Consider that hundreds of children are transported to and from school through this intersection every day.

Roundabouts improve traffic flow and are better for the environment and take up less land than road widening.  Federal Highway Administration research shows that traffic flow improves after traditional intersections are converted to roundabouts. Less idling reduces vehicle emissions and fuel consumption.

If you support construction of the the Highway 227/Los Ranchos Road roundabout proposed by the professional engineers and planners at County of SLO, Caltrans and SLOCOG, please sign this petition and attend the February 2 SLOCOG meeting to voice your support.
