Until the 1990s the LGBT acronym was simply that, LGBT. During and especially after the 1990s the LGBT acronym has expanded which may seem like a good thing on the surface, but when you look into it, it isn't that good of a thing. Let's take a very common LGBT acronym nowadays for example, LGBTQIA. Usually this stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender part is not what is problematic, it is was comes after that. For starters, the word queer is a word still used against many LGBT people as a slur. As a transgender, bisexual, girl it has actually been used against me a couple times. The term queer is also very broad, and in my opinion unnecessary. Intersex is not a gender, it is actually a medical condition. Also, a lot of intersex people I have spoken to have told me they do not want intersex to be considered LGBT. There main reasons I've been given are that it harms the intersex community to be associated with the LGBT community (sadly), and intersex is a medical condition not a gender. Yes, the argument can be made transgender and intersex are similar, but I only believe transgender should stay part of the acronym because it has been part of it since the 1980s. Asexuality is the most complicated and debatable of all of these. The reasons I believe asexuality should not be considered LGBT are: asexuality was not considered part of the LGBT acronym until the late 1990s, asexuality is very different from lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, a lot of asexual people themselves do not want asexual to be considered LGBT, asexual people already have their own community called AVEN. To sum up, the full acronym should be LGBT, and nothing more.
