At East Lake High school, the current amount of days you can miss before being unable to exempt your exams is 4. Not only is this a ridiculously short amount, but they do NOT take into consideration illness, injury, or emergencies (whether that be family or general) as days that do not count. As someone who has watched others and experienced first hand their chances at exemption that they worked so hard for get ruined, many people find this restriction bafflilingy unsatisfactory. I watched my friend be put in the hospital for 2 weeks and the school did now allow her to exempt. I have an illness that causes me to become sick often, but they do not take that into account as an excuse for why I miss many days. Not only is this rule somewhat dangerous, but it is also unhealthy. When kids are sick, some feel like they can't miss school due to the fact that they need to exempt. This causes them to go to school sick and spread it to other students, in turn causing a chain of events. 2 years ago I had a girl who was hospitalized for the flu come back to school sick so she would be able to exempt exams, cough on me, and get me sick, which then put me out of school for an entire week, ruining my chances to exempt. This could have easily been avoided and could also be a factor in the flu epidemics each year. I think that if you have a valid doctor's note, you should be able to miss class and not have it count against your 4 day maximum. I also think that if you have a provable family emergency (such as a funeral) you should also not have it count against you. Though I can see how this could be taken advantage of which is something that I am sure worries educators, don't you think students mental health and well being are much more important than a couple of kids loop-holing the system?
