Why this petition matters

At our school; Pinelands Middle School and Pinelands High School we have ids that separate students by colors; gold, green and white. These said colors are based off the students grades, attendance, and their behavior/discipline and they are colored stickers on the students ids. On December 21, 2021 pinelands had a  “pop up event” for students in the high school building; the students with gold stickers had the privilege to watch a holiday movie for three periods, the students with green sticker got a mini party that lasted half a period, and finally the students with white sticker got leftovers of hot chocolate at the end of the day 15 minutes before the school day ended.

this is discrimination toward students who have learning disabilities and it is against the law.

“Public schools are prohibited by federal law from discriminating against people with disabilities, and cannot deny them access to academic corses, field trips, extracurricular activities, school technology, and health services”(aclu.org [know your rights; student rights])

“ title ll states: ‘[N]o qualified individual with a disability shall, by reason of such disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs, of activities of a public entity, or can be subjected to discrimination by any such entity” (Ed.org {U.S. department of education} [disability discrimination]

mental health is a big problem in this generation and discrimination with colors on id can/could make kids suicidal and have increased anxiety and stress levels

”experiencing discrimination and provoke stress responses similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. Children who experience discrimination from teachers are more likely to have negative attitudes about school and lower academic motivation and performance and are increased risk of dropping out of high school”

I spoke with the principal [Troy Henderson] on the day of the pop up event asking why we do we have the colored stickers on the ids and his response was “the colors are meant to motivate students to try harder in there school work”. This method of “motivation” has high levels of discrimination in school and students are getting bullied and made fun of for the color sticker they have. Im not saying that all of the students in the Pinelands schools have learning disabilities but they could have mental illnesses that are effecting there motivation to get their school work done and with this system it’s effecting their mental health more and making them feel more drained and depressed or anxious. No school should separate students by their grades and attendance for extra events for school, it’s discriminating. Join me in the fight to not label students by three simple colors.
