Kimberly Banda started this petition to Pinal County Government and

We are asking for the shut-down of the Citizens Posse program of Pinal County, Arizona. This program states that citizens can undergo just 4 hours of training, a "minimal background check" and become deputized by the Pinal County Sherrif to "defend the county".  The deputizing of citizens (again with minimal training and background checks) raises numerous safety concerns.  Following are two examples of how people can be killed by citizens tasked to protect and help keep safety or “law & order”.  In 2012, Treyvon Martin, an unarmed teenager was killed by member of the neighborhood watch, George Zimmerman.  The second, in February 2020 Ahmaud Arbery was chased down and killed by Travis and Gregory McMichaels.  The father-son duo stated that they were “acting within Georgia’s citizen arrest and self-defense statutes.” Please sign this petition to Pinal County Government and Sheriff Mark Lamb requesting that this program be shut down to protect all residents of Arizona.

Concerns:

·         Puts the safety of all citizens, especially minorities, at great risk

·         Puts the safety of the deputized citizen at risk in any escalated situation

·         Puts the safety of law enforcement officers at risk

·         Disrespectfully minimizes the training that law enforcement undergoes, with the recognition that the highly trained officers can still get it wrong

·         Only a minimal background check and 4 hours of training required

Questions:

·         Will de-escalation training will be received?

·         Will racial bias training will be received?

·         Can the deputized citizen make arrests?

·         Can the deputized citizen step-in any situation outside of being “called” to help by the Sheriff?

·         Who is responsible for the continuous direction, training, and supervision of the deputized citizens?

·         Will deputized citizens wear body cameras?
