Why this petition matters

As the 5th largest city in the US, Phoenix is home to 1.6 million people. A significant amount of the population is Black and have been victims of police brutality all over the valley. The latest victim being Dion Johnson who was killed by DPS on May 25th. The state troopers involved were not equipped with body cameras or dashcams. Neither DPS or Phoenix PD has released the name of the trooper who fired the shot. Although investigators stated there was a struggle that led to the shooting, no further information was provided and many questions remain unanswered. The identity of the trooper needs to be released and if DPS says this shooting was justified, probable cause needs to be identified. We demand justice for Dion Johnson’s death.

Phoenix PD has gained national attention because of this situation and many others. It is also considered one of the most deadliest forces in the country. In 2018, Maricopa County had more officer-involved shootings than Los Angeles County. This is not the legacy or reputation we want for Phoenix, Arizona or the Police Department. Police reform must take place immediately to better train, equip, and educate those who wear a badge and serve our city. End police brutality now!
