Justice to the Unjust: EJK holds no boundaries

Since he came to power, President Duterte has faced an extensive criticism from human rights groups locally and internationally claiming he is inciting extrajudicial killings, taking the rights of possible victims for a fair trial.

Suspects fighting back in arrests has been a usual excuse for the police to shoot them dead. But the recent killing of 17-year-old Kian Loyd Delos Santos on the night of August 16 triggered a wider public outrage. The police once more claimed that Delos Santos exchanged fire with the Caloocan police, which contradicts evidences and witnesses proving the victim’s innocence and compliance to the authorities.

From the day Duterte took power, the “real number” of homicide cases was 9,432 which includes 2,692 deaths from law enforcement operations that were presumed to be legitimate and automatically investigated. Latest estimates of the number of deaths related to drug run as high as 8,000.

The data below is the number of EJK cases as of January 9, 2017:

  • 4,146 number of murder cases outside police operations
  • 3,271 number of cases/incidents of deaths under investigation
  • 875 number of cases/incidents with investigation concluded; among these:

                        543 are with suspects arrested
332 are with suspects at large

Extrajudicial killings may place the country in big trouble if left unchecked and uninvestigated. Obligations under international treaties on the respect for human rights may be infringed if these numbers will continue to rise without proper actions by the government.

As Filipino citizens, we have the power to defend our rights, our fellow citizens, and our country with the true servings of justice. We should be informed of the issues that our country faces and we should take action by participating in voicing out our opinions about the subject at hand. This is now the time to start demanding all the rights that is denied by our government, to fight back and to start gathering for a better change not only for the Filipino citizens but also for the families that have been victims of the warped justice system of the current administration.

We must always remember that no crime can ever cover and make up for another. Sign this petition to call on the authority to take legal actions on this issue.
