Value the Farmers

"Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man." - George Washington
Filipinos were told as children not to waste the food on their plates because farmers’ blood and sweat are the reason why Filipinos' stomachs are full. That is how valuable farmers are: they spend hours under the scorching sun and cold rains just to ease one's appetite and to finance only their basic daily needs. But, are they valued in our society?
As Sec. Proceso Alcala of Department of Agriculture once said, "Gusto kong mabago ang imahe ng mga magsasaka. Dapat nakangiti na nakasakay sa traktora at may pera sa bulsa.", and I hope it will happen as soon as possible.
Farmers are not considered as pillars of this country’s economic growth and development. Agriculture accounts for 10% of the country’s Gross Development Product (GDP), and is the third-largest employer in the labor sector. Climate change, low prioritization from the government, and land reform are just some of the many problems farmers in the Philippines have been experiencing. Farmers starve, and as a result, young people become more and more disinterested in engaging in farming as a means of livelihood. The farmers are now voiceless, so please move closer to them.
If farmers were prioritized and given enough significance, the economy of the Philippines may have boomed long ago because of the agricultural sector. If there’s no farmer, there’s no food, no future. Support them, love them.
