In some countries like Mexico, South Korea, and Sweden, requiring men to render military service for several years has become part of the tradition. However, both men and women are encouraged to render military service in Israel. Men are required to perform three years of combat and security services while women are only required to perform two years of non-combat services. In the Philippines, Filipinos are not required to render military service to the government but Senate Bill No. 1734 or National Defense Act was recently filed by Senator Panfilo Lacson, which if passed and implemented, would inflict major changes to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The aforementioned bill aims to strengthen the country’s national defense by requiring all Filipinos, natural-born or naturalized, to acquire basic and sufficient military training and education for a minimum of two years. In addition to that, the sale of strategic defense real properties is also prohibited unless it is approved by the Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) and the president and procurement of military supplies and equipment is included in the bill. Moreover, this mandatory military service of Filipinos could aid in strengthening the country’s national defense against terrorism, insurgency and other internal and external threats by providing assistance to the Armed Forces of the Philippines in case of any disaster, war or any unexpected phenomena may occur.
