Embrace Your Color

Do not let your real color fade away. Whether your skin is as dark as chocolate or as white as snow, it is beautiful in its own way. Making it more beautiful is not wrong; however, changing your color may jeopardize your skin.
Many dark people, especially women, feel the need to whiten their skin. On the other hand, fair skinned people want to darken their skin tone. Both of these desires may be influenced by multimedia and general perceptions of the society. These individuals may not all the time notice that the processes they undergo to achieve these beauty standards may do them more harm than good.
Negative Effects of Skin Whitening (Tabod, 2016):
- Skin Cancer
- Hyper pigmentation
- Thinning of Skin
- Loss of Skin Healing Properties
- Skin Irritation
- Worsening of Skin Infections
- Mercury Poisoning
Negative Effects of Skin Tanning:
- Sun Tan
- Premature Aging/ Photoaging
- Skin Cancer
- Actinic or Solar Keratoses
- Eye Damage, Photokerasis, Cataracts
- Immune System Suppression
It is important to note that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sun exposure or tanning beds are linked to majority of skin cancers. Melanin, a pigment that guards the skin, are produced in greater amounts in the skin of darker people but only to a particular degree ("Dark Skin Tones and Skin Cancer," 2016). Therefore, no matter the skin color, everybody is at risk. Every person is advised to apply sunblock daily and exercise "sun-safe habits" like using protective wear and looking for shade ("Dark Skin Tones and Skin Cancer," 2016).
As STEM students, we have the duty to spread awareness on such subject because it is integrated in our curriculum. Biology lessons about the body systems have prompted us to encourage everyone to love, embrace, and appreciate their skin color. You can do this by properly taking care
of your skin and doing safe measures to amplify its beauty.
