Animal Experimentation: The Necessary Evil

Over 115 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused worldwide every year due to animal experimentation. Animal experimentation also known as animal testing is the use of animals for the purpose of testing or controlling variables in a study. It is any scientific experiment for living animals which is likely to cause them pain, stress or harm in order to get the results. Animal experimentation is different from taking your pet to the vet as it forces the animals to undergo testing such as injection of harmful substances, exposing them to radiation, forcing them to inhale toxic gases, removing their organs or tissues, and many more. Animal experimentation harm animals and may be the cause of the decline of their population thus, the researchers should use alternative testing instead of animals as research subjects.

According to former National Cancer Institute Director Dr. Richard Klausner “We have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn’t work in humans.” Drugs that appear safe and effective in animals may fail in humans or cause significant harm or worst, death. In a study made by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (2002) found that 92 percent of drugs tested in clinical trials following animal testing was not approved. In fact there are also drugs that are safe to be used by humans but not for animals, an example of this is Aspirin. The latest official report from the European Commission shows that in 2011, almost 11.5 million animals were used in experiments across Europe, only a slight decrease on 2008. Also, more than 90% of basic scientific discoveries, most of which are from experiments on animals, fail to lead to human treatments.

Nowadays there are alternative testing methods that can be used. Animals should not be used on researches to prove something to be effective because they are different from human beings, it can harm them and these tests may mislead researchers in finding treatment or cure for a particular condition in humans. Alternative testing methods now exist that can replace the need for animals. One example is the in vitro testing (in glass testing), studying a cell in a petri dish. This method can result in more relevant findings than animal testing because human cells can be used. Moreover, the Harvard’s Wyss Institute has created an alternative to animal testing which is the “organs-on-chips”. It contains human cells grown in a state-of-the-art system to imitate the function and structure of human organs.

The use of animals for research testing should not be allowed at it harm animals and may be the cause of the decline of their population. Also, it may mislead to discovering new cures and treatments for humans because animals and human beings are different from one another, instead, they should use an alternative method for medical researches. We suggest using alternative methods in conducting a medical research rather than using animals as subjects. Through this, researchers may possibly get more accurate results through in vitro testing and "organs-on-chips” and at the same time, they can save animals. Animals should not be used in clinical experimentation.
