Urgent - Stop NSW's New Land Clearing Laws

This petition had 2,323 supporters

On the 25th of August, NSW will have new land clearing laws that will enable farmers to clear endangered ecological communities and threatened species habitat that have been protected since 1990. The greatest pressure to clear is in landscapes already over cleared that cant afford to lose another tree, as shown above.

The new laws are rushed and incomplete, and because they were made by farmers for the farmers they have no scientific justification. They are made even worse because for the first few months it will be up to the farmers to determine if their land is of low or high conservation value. Low value they can clear, high value they need to get advice and a certificate to clear. Considering the extent of illegal clearing that has occurred in the past, it is highly likely there will be a rush to clear when the laws can't be enforced and farmers can't be fined.

The Federal government has written to NSW calling on them to defer the regulation because of the lack of protection given to threatened species and communities.

The laws resulted from a political promise to a few redneck farmers, which coincided with the murder of Glen Turner who was investigating illegal clearing on the property owned by Ian Turnbull at Croppa Creek.

Glen's family are devastated that the NSW government are to make such clearing legal and are lobbying to get the government to defer the start date and change the legislation to maintain or improve the protection for woodlands and open forests in agricultural land.

The World Wildlife Fund commissioned a study to determine the extent of the clearing that could occur. It found that 8 million hectares of woodlands and open forests of which 2.2 million hectares of Koala habitat could be bulldozed.

Please sign and share this petition to stop the clearing of woodlands and forests and to honour the legacy of Glen Turner who died trying to stop illegal clearing.

Please write to the NSW premier and minister for the environment asking them to defer the start date until the laws have been fixed.
