My father recently passed. Ours was a hard relationship. He was a man who had a hard path laid before him. He was funny. He was lost. He was sweet. He was filled with rage. He was an alcoholic. He was hard to forgive. We didn’t get along much when I was growing up. But in the last few years before he passed, we reconnected and often talked about the one thing we had in common -- the Eagles.
I feel like the best way to show I forgive my dad is to have him at the one place, the one thing we could share and talk about -- I’m asking the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles to let me spread my dad’s ashes at Lincoln Financial field.
I hated football as a kid. The only reason I even learned the game was because by studying the Eagles upcoming schedule. The stats. The opponents. All so I could predict his often violent moods. I grew to love the game. I grew to love the Eagles. And, when we reconnected, I grew to love my dad.
My happiest memories were the rare times when we would both get tickets to a game by chance and meet in the Linc. We would hug and talk excitedly about the action, then run back to our separate seats.
I tell you all this not because I want you to excuse my Fathers acts in the past. But to help me to honor what he was trying to do in the end. He will never see a Lombardi hoisted in Philly. But I want him to be a part of every game I can attend from now on. Because I loved my Dad. Because forgiveness is real. Because honoring one’s father is what any son would do.
Please help me to show him one final loving act in the place he loved more then anything, with the team he loved the most. Sign my petition asking the owner of the Eagles to let me spread my dad’s ashes at Lincoln Financial Field.
