Defend the Central Delaware Waterfront Plan and Reject AAA Sprawl.

After years of letting Big Box developers blight our Delaware waterfront with ugly suburban trash, the City of Philadelphia finally adopted new rules (the Central Delaware Overlay) that would put a stop to the madness, and finally put our waterfront on track to become the world class walkable, bikeable environment we all know it can be.
Or so we thought!
While the new rules clearly prohibit any more auto-oriented suburban buildings on Columbus Ave, AAA Mid-Atlantic snuck an application in the day before the Overlay went into effect for a new auto service garage right at Tasker and Columbus.
AAA has made a few token changes to the original design, but this is still very much a janky strip mall building more appropriate to some fallen New Jersey exurb than the world class public space Philadelphia has spent so many years, and so many millions of dollars planning.
The bad news is that the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections bungled the situation by failing to revoke AAA's permit, so now AAA will be allowed to build this hunk of junk if they can convince the Philadelphia City Planning Commission to let them.
But the good news is that "the [Planning C]ommissioners have a lot of discretion" to do the right thing, according to this Plan Philly article, which quotes Commission Chairman Alan Greenberger as saying:
“There are no set criteria, but always our interest is about the public realm and the relationship of the proposal to any plans that are out there, particularly any ones that the commission adopted."
Philly Planners are a good group of folks, and they may well want to do the right thing. But they need to hear from us that the public is strongly behind them putting the kibosh on new sprawl. This is why it's so important that you sign and share this petition.
Philadelphia deserves better.
