The city of Philadelphia has a compelling opportunity to further enhance its outdoor space in the historic FDR park in South Philadelphia through a low cost and environmentally friendly initiative that we are confident will bring the community together and unite all Philadelphian’s. However, it is imperative we act now in order to bring this proposal to fruition.

We are hereby requesting you join our coalition of South Philly disc golf enthusiasts and sign the enclosed petition to apply pressure on Philadelphia’s City Council and Mayor to build a world class disc golf course in the historic FDR park in South Philadelphia. We have engaged the City in discussions to include a disc golf course as part of the ongoing FDR park renovations, however these discussions have thus far gained minimal traction and failed to receive the votes required to put the plan into action. We need your help.

As all major capital projects have been suspended (including the FDR park renovations), we are fortunate to have one more opportunity to bring this initiative to the forefront. It is up to us to prove to the City that there is sufficient demand and community support for a disc golf course!

Based on our initial work, we envision the course will be built in / around the Ecological Core section of the park. The course will bring many benefits to the community (disc golf enthusiasts and rookies alike), some of which we have outlined herein:

·       $0 cost to participate – free for all players

·       Course will be maintained by the Friends of Sedgley Woods, one of the oldest clubs in the country, established in 1976

·       Suitable for all ages / sexes

·       Low cost to build / maintain (fraction of the $200mm budget for the FDR project)

·       Current quote of $26K is far less than the costs of other projects such as basketball courts, tennis courts and athletic fields while also being better for the environment

·       The ecology of a Disc golf course aligns with the City’s goal of creating an urban oasis

We encourage you to sign the petition and join the coalition! If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Thanks and look forward to your support!
