Every year tens of millions of sharks are taken from the oceans only to have their fins cut off and then thrown back - alive - into the sea to die a slow painful death by suffocation. Why? For Soup.
Shark fin soup is a popular delicacy - a status symbol - in China and in Chinese restaurants around the world, including Philadelphia; especially for weddings and banquets. The shark fins themselves are tasteless, have no nutritional or medicinal value and are used only for texture.
As vitally important apex predators, sharks maintain a critical balance in the marine ecosystems around the world. If sharks are eliminated, disastrous effects will happen further down the food chain, including the collapse of fish population, commercial fisheries and degradation of coral reefs.
Sharks are absolutely necessary in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem.
One third of all shark species are threatened with extinction and 90% of large shark populations have already been wiped out. Sharks are being depleted faster than they can reproduce.
Sharks are essential, the soup is not.
Stand up to this senseless slaughter by supporting the petition to ban the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins in Philadelphia and in your hometown today! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0hQaJonLBM
