Majority of high skilled immigrants along with their families including young and infant kids immigrated to the United States from the past 15 to 20 years and have greatly contributed to growth of USA.Most of them came to this country as high skilled immigrant (H-1 visa) and many of these yet waiting in lines for thier Permanent Residency (GC). Like everyone else in this country they pay federal, state and local taxes and abide by laws of the land.
Dependent kids (H-4 kids) of these families have been raised in New Jersey attending elementary, middle and High schools here. Some of them lived in NJ state for more than 10 years, and yet they are considered as out of state students and forced to pay out-of-state fee. Unlike many other states (like NY, PA), New Jersey is one of the few states where local students having H-4 visa are forced to pay out-of-state tuition at public colleges and universites, despite the fact that they have been NJ residents for most of their lives.
In 2013, Gov. Chris Christie signed into law The New Jersey Equity Act (NJ Dream Act) which allows undocumented college students to pay in-state tuition rates in New Jersey with certain eligibility criteria. Though it is very appreciative to support undocumentd students, It is highly unfair to exclude the H-4 dependent kids who have been stayting leagally here and paying taxes from in-state tuition fees.
These students only want the opportunity to obtain a college degree as in-state students in order to give back to this state that they know as home.
Multiple bills have been introduced by New Jersey legislature, that would extend in-state tuition to qualifying H-4 students, but have failed to pass. Add your name to support this petition to pass tuition equiality legislation in Njew Jersey in support of young H-4 kids who want the opportunity to pursue a college degree.
Equality of education for NJ residents is the need of the hour
